The burning bush

There I was

Just going about the business

Of an ordinary day

A repetition of comfortable routines

Unconscious skills

When.

It caught my attention

Provoked my curiosity

I was tempted to a closer look

This burning, on fire

Thing.

Ablaze, yet not consumed.

The fire drew my gaze

Held me captive in the hypnosis

That is the phenomenon of the ages

I came to realise that my ground of everyday things

Was in fact

Holy.

Sacred.

Enchanted.

And blessed.

It seemed natural then

To walk with lighter tread

Upon such sacred earth

To touch the soil

From which we come

And will return

I removed my shoes.

As I gazed, the flames spoke

Whispered dreams

Of possibility

Risk

And venture

Calling me beyond myself

Outside many comfort zones

Asking me to believe in something

Outrageous

To speak truth to power

To bear tenderly

With the complaints and faults

Of the everyday folks

To wrestle with God

On behalf of others

To climb the mountains

Descend the valleys

To pursue a mission

Whose fulfillment lays beyond

The boundaries

Of a lifespan

(see Exodus 2:1-15)
